Tawakkol Karman is the founder and president of Women Journalists Without Chains, a Yemeni organization that promotes civil rights, particularly freedom of expression. In 2011, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work to advance peaceful protests and promote women’s rights in Yemen, becoming the first Yemeni, first Arab woman, and second Muslim woman to be awarded the prize.
